Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year old mother of prominent Today show host, Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since the early hours of Feb. 1, 2026. She was last seen by family members around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, after she was dropped off following a family dinner. Around 11 a.m. the following morning, members of Guthrie’s church had contacted her family with concern after she hadn’t shown up for Sunday mass. Guthrie is described as a very religious woman and church go-er, so friends and family found it very unusual for her not to attend mass that morning. When family members arrived at her “Tuscan-area home” that afternoon around noon, Guthrie was nowhere to be found. Instead, they reportedly found blood in the home and signs of forced entry. This led authorities to theorize that Guthrie had been taken, against her will, to a secondary location and could be facing immense danger.
Investigators have not released any possible suspects and have only released limited information to the public thus far, but there are a couple important pieces of evidence that could crack this case right open. Due to prior health complications, Guthrie had a pacemaker installed that was directly connected to her cellphone via Bluetooth. This feature allowed doctors to receive data about her heart faster and easier than ever before, from one cellphone to another, storing information on a medical application. Here’s the catch–this information can only be sent back and forth when Guthrie is near or in contact with her cellphone. Guthrie’s phone was left at the scene, but investigators concluded that the last time her pacemaker had sent a signal to her phone was around 2 a.m. the morning she went missing. This could be a huge indicator as to when the crime had taken place.
Authorities have also received three anonymous ransom letters possibly in relation to Guthrie’s disappearance. The letters have demanded several million dollars in Bitcoin to be delivered by Thursday, Feb. 5, and have stated that Guthrie will be killed if the money isn’t delivered by Monday, Feb. 9. Investigators are still legitimizing these letters and investigating this lead, but they have yet to be proven as real. That being said, internet sleuths everywhere are having a social media hay day with this new information but it could have negative reinforcement on the case. Authorities ask the public to please not spread any misinformation in regard to the case on the internet and to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s tip line if they believe to have any useful leads on the case.

Because this article reports on an ongoing true crime investigation, I appreciated how straightforward, easy to follow, and factual it was. The most important details were placed right at the beginning. The piece was short, but it was packed with information, including direct quotes from law enforcement and updates tied to recent evidence and discoveries. Overall, I thought it was very well reported, and I enjoyed reading it.
