One of the most interesting aspects of true crime media is how much the format changes the way audiences experience a story. The podcast My Favorite Murder, hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, is a strong example of this. Unlike many serious, documentary-style crime podcasts, My Favorite Murder blends detailed criminal cases with humor, personal conversation, and casual storytelling. While that combination has been criticized at times, it is also what makes the podcast so effective and different from other true crime media. The show works because it takes advantage of the intimacy of audio, although there are moments where the lack of visuals weakens the storytelling.
One episode that highlights these strengths and weaknesses is the show’s coverage of the Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The case itself is already deeply familiar to many audiences through documentaries, television specials, and written investigations, which makes it interesting to hear it adapted into podcast form. Rather than presenting the case like a polished investigative report, Kilgariff and Hardstark tell the story conversationally. Their reactions, side comments, and dark humor make the episode feel less distant and clinical than a traditional documentary. In many ways, listeners feel like they are hearing two friends discuss a case together rather than being lectured by reporters.

That tone is what separates the podcast from written journalism. Humor, especially through vocal delivery, becomes part of the storytelling itself. Sarcastic reactions, awkward pauses, and shifts in tone communicate emotion in ways that text alone often cannot. Even when discussing horrific crimes, the hosts use humor to create relief from the heaviness of the subject matter. In a written article, those jokes could easily come across as insensitive or flat, but hearing the hosts laugh, hesitate, or react emotionally makes the humor feel more human and conversational. The podcast medium allows personality to become part of the reporting experience.
At the same time, the limitations of audio are clear in a case like JonBenét Ramsey’s. True crime stories often rely heavily on visuals: crime scene photos, timelines, maps, interviews, or media footage. Without those elements, listeners have to imagine the setting themselves. In this episode, there are moments where details become difficult to fully follow because there is no visual structure guiding the audience through the evidence. A documentary or written multimedia article could organize information more clearly and immerse viewers with photographs or archival clips. Podcasts depend almost entirely on narration, which can make complicated cases feel scattered or harder to emotionally connect with in the same way.
Still, I do think this story specifically benefited from being a podcast. The appeal of My Favorite Murder is not just the crime itself, but the relationship between the hosts and the audience. The conversational style creates a sense of closeness that a written piece would struggle to replicate. A video version may have added visual immersion, but it also could have distracted from the chemistry and storytelling rhythm that make the show successful. The episode works because it uses the strengths of audio: personality, tone, timing, and intimacy. Even with the limitations of not being able to see the details of the case, the podcast transforms true crime into something that feels personal and emotionally immediate rather than purely informational.
